Tributes paid as Battle of Britain is remembered
RAF Servicemen past and present were honoured as they marched and laid wreaths on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
The march took them from London Road carpark to the war memorial at Newark Parish Church, as they were welcomed through the street by onlookers.
Wreaths were then laid by Mr Brian Hughes, on behalf of Balderton and Newark RAFA; Mrs Stella Weatherby, for the Ladies’ Section of Newark RAFA; and Mr Barry Wilson of the Royal Observer Corps Association.
A civic procession, led by the Mayor of Newark, Mr Rob Crowe saw dignitaries parade from Newark Town Hall to the memorial to pay their respects.
Mr Dennis Atkins, the chairman of Newark RAFA, said it was important that people were given the opportunity to remember.
"We need to mark that respect, it's only one day a year but it's good that we can celebrate the work that has been done through the years.
"I was with the RAF for 39 years. It's been a big part of my life and I have met so many extraordinary people in my time."
"There is always excellent support for our cause, we could with a bit more but we appreciate all those who pay their respects.
Mr Mick Scatcherd, chairman of Balderton RAFA, agreed that it was important that people remembered those who had served through the years.
"This is a tradition every year to mark our respects for those who have served during the Battle of Britain.
"We have to move our commemorations forward so we can get as many people here as we can. It's a nice occasion to be a part of."
Following the laying of wreaths, a church service followed which was led by Rev Stephen Morris, before a salute was received by dignitaries as they paraded from the church to Newark Town Hall.
