Trip offers taste of African living
A teaching assistant is preparing to travel to Kenya where she will live in a village with locals while helping the community.
Miss Amy Baugh (24) of Woodside Farm, Wellow, is one of 11 selected for the trip, organised by the Young Farmers’ Club.
More than 30 people applied for a place.
Miss Baugh, who works at the Minster School, Southwell, will fly to Africa in August.
She has been a member of Tuxford Young Farmers’ Club for eight years and is the club leader.
Miss Baugh went to Stratford-Upon-Avon to be interviewed by a panel of three senior YFC members to see if she was suitable for the ten-day trip.
She said: “It was brilliant when I realised I was going on the trip. I am really excited about it.
“I have hardly done any travelling before. In fact I have never been outside of Europe, so I am sure it will be an eye-opener.
“I am not sure if I’m ready for a place with no electricity and running water.”
When she arrives in Kenya Miss Baugh will be taken to the village where she will stay.
During her stay, Miss Baugh will help the locals maintain their village.
She will plant trees and collect fresh water.
On the last day of her trip she plans to visit one of Kenya’s national parks.
“I think this will be one of the highlights of the trip,” she said.
“I am really looking forward to it.”
The trip is part of the Young Farmers’ Club discovery programme, which aims to give members the opportunity to travel abroad and experience other cultures who share a similar interest or background in farming.
