Newark Police clamp down on crime across the district through Nottinghamshire Police's Operation Sceptre week of action

Two men attacked another with weapons and were covered in blood, a drug-driver was taken off the roads and several were reported or arrested for cannabis possession.

The knife crime team were deployed to the Newark area and were joined by OS roads policing.

A male was stopped in his vehicle on Bowbridge Road and searched by officers who recovered nothing. However, he was found to be under the influence of drugs, failed a drugs wipe and was arrested.

A report of grievous bodily harm was reported on Alexandra Avenue, where a victim was found to have been attacked by two males with weapons. The police teams stopped two suspects covered in blood in a vehicle on Hawton Lane, and arrested the pair. CID will be dealing with this now in collaboration with the response team.

Another male was stopped in a vehicle on Rowan Way, Balderton, where a small amount of cannabis was found. He failed a roadside drugs wipe and was arrested.

Two other males were halted by officers on Bowbridge Road, where they were both searched and a small amount of cannabis was recovered from inside the vehicle. Both were reported for possession of cannabis, and one for driving offences.

A male was reported for summons for driving without a licence or insurance when stopped by officers on Pelham Street.

Sergeant Steven King, of the knife crime team, said: "The team was tasked to a number of areas around the county based on intelligence and had a significant impact in each location.

"We were supported by other departments including roads policing, response, neighbourhood policing teams, CID and prisoner handling teams, so this was a real team effort.

"While government guidance on staying indoors and social distancing meant most places were quieter than normal, we made a number of arrests and tackled weapon and drug related offences, making our communities safer.

"This work continues all year round but Operation Sceptre is a good chance to highlight some of the work we do to keep people safe."
