Nottingham Trent University's Lyth Building in Southwell is named RIBA East Midlands Building of the Year

A university building has won an acclaimed architecture award thanks to its unique design.

The Lyth Building, on Nottingham Trent University’s Brackenhurst campus, Southwell, is a multi-use educational space with a cafeteria and learning spaces set around a communal garden.

Designed by Evans Vettori Architects, the building was one of eight shortlisted for the 2022 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) East Midlands Awards, and has won the title of East Midlands Building of the Year.

Steve Denton, the university’s chief operating officer and registrar, said: “The Lyth is a stunning and prominent building which has further transformed our Brackenhurst Campus into a vibrant and cohesive environment for students to learn and be inspired by. Winning East Midlands Building of the Year is a remarkable achievement and we’re very proud of everyone involved in the project who have helped us deliver this award-winning building.”

The jury said the building complemented the historic buildings on the campus, and its landscape. It combines a reception area for the campus, a large lecture hall, refectory, research laboratory, computer laboratory, staff offices and large teaching rooms set around a central garden.

RIBA president Simon Allford said: “The results of positive collaboration between architect and client, and design team and contractor, they demonstrate that high quality, sustainable architecture can positively impact the lives of the people that engage with it.”

Regional winners go through to a national final.
