Claire Penny, portfolio holder for sustainable economic growth at Newark and Sherwood District Council, describes opportunities for growth in Newark and Sherwood

This week we were delighted to announce two fantastic funding opportunities that are now available to support the growth and sustainability of businesses and communities in Newark and Sherwood, writes Claire Penny, portfolio holder for sustainable economic growth at Newark and Sherwood District Council.

Firstly, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) Business Growth and Productivity Scheme offers grants of between £2,500 and £10,000 to support local micro- and small-sized enterprises (SMEs), with a total of £100,000 funding available. Eligible projects must align with the Council’s Economic Growth Strategy, focusing on job creation, increased productivity, and improved environmental sustainability.

Businesses that have been trading for at least 12 months and employ no more than 50 full-time equivalent staff are encouraged to apply.

Secondly, the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF) Grant Programme has also been launched, offering capital grants between £10,000 and £40,000 to eligible organisations in designated rural areas.

This programme aims to support the growth and resilience of our rural economy and communities. Whether you are a community group looking to improve local facilities, a rural enterprise aiming to expand, or an organisation with a project that could boost tourism, sustainability, or local heritage, this grant could help turn your ideas into reality.

The application window for both programmes close on Wednesday 16 July 2025. Both funding opportunities require applicants to provide match funding towards the total project costs and demonstrate how their projects align with the respective funding priorities.

Applications will be assessed on strategic fit, deliverability, sustainability, and value for money.

I encourage all eligible businesses and organisations to take advantage of these funding opportunities to drive growth, enhance local facilities, and support sustainable development in our district. For full guidance and to apply, please visit the District Council’s website or contact the UKSPF and REPF team via email at UKSPF@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk.

At the same time as launching these grant opportunities, we are also preparing for this year’s Economic Growth Conference. Returning on 9 October at Southwell Racecourse this free event promises a powerful mix of keynote talks, workshops, and networking all aimed at helping local businesses adapt and thrive.

Then, on 13 November, the Future First Careers Expo returns to Newark Showground. Now in its eighth year, the Expo connects students aged 15–18 with over 50 exhibitors from business, education, and training. It’s a vital opportunity for young people to explore their next steps and for local employers to inspire the workforce of tomorrow.

Full details for both events will be announced soon — but if you’re a business looking to grow, connect, or give back, now’s the time to get involved. Together, we can unlock the potential of Newark and Sherwood, creating a thriving and sustainable future for our communities.
