Conditions of Barbygate pub The Roaring Meg’s licence modified by Newark and Sherwood District Council after unsafe and exposed electrical fittings were discovered at the premises.

The conditions of a pub’s licence have been modified after unsafe and exposed electrical fittings were discovered at the premises.

The licence holder for The Roaring Meg, Barnbygate, has been ordered to provide a Tenant Meeting Report or other premises audit relating to management of the premises as a condition to its licence, by December 23, 2025.

A licensing subcommittee at Newark and Sherwood District Council made the decision on December 23, 2024, with the pub notified in early 2025.

The licence was called in for review on the grounds of public safety following a visit to the premises by environmental health, which resulted in the discovery of exposed electrical components and connections in a number of rooms — including a smoke detector, broken sockets, and a socket not suitable for a wet area in the cellar.

The licence holder, Cycle PS Ltd, was also told it must retain the reports or audits, and make them available for inspection on request by Newark and Sherwood District Council as the licensing authority.

The full decision stated that: “The Premises Licence Holder shall provide to the Licensing Authority and the Local Authority as the responsible Authority for Environmental Health a copy of any Tenant Meeting Report or other premises audit produced following a visit to the Premises by a representative or employee of the Premises Licence Holder for the purposes of management of the Premises.

“Such Tenant Meeting Report or premises audit to be sent to the Licensing Authority and Local Authority by the 23rd of December 2025 and no later than the anniversary of this date thereafter. All Tenant Meeting Reports or premises audit documentation is to be retained at the Premises and made available for inspection on request by the Licensing Authority or the Local Authority.”

The changes were considered necessary on the basis of public safety.
