Newark Advertiser reader letter: Unsustainable

More news, no ads

I refer to the exorbitant salary of the Chief Executive of Newark and Sherwood District Council — £128,281 (Rich List Reveals Chief Executive Pay, Advertiser, April 14).

But, that is probably not the true figure as there will be other add-ons — all taken from the tax-paying residents of the area.

On top of this there has been an advert for a new town clerk for Newark. The salary was advertised as around the £84,000 mark, plus all the unseen costs.

Last year, one Saturday, I stopped near the Town Hall, to listen to a steel band and saw on a notice board the town council’s accounts for the previous year.

The wages bill was approaching £1m for Newark town alone.

Just how on earth, having extracted all that, by direct or indirect taxation do they expect the business and private element of the town, district, and county to continue to exist? — B. Clark, Balderton.
