Veteran care home resident celebrates her 104th birthday
A veteran resident of a Fernwood care home is celebrating her 104th birthday.
Irene Mitchell celebrated her landmark birthday at Lancaster Grange Care Home with a tea party and surrounded by her family and friends.
She was born on July 11, 1915 in Cambridge, and moved to India in 1939 when she was 24 to work on a tea plantation, where she met and married her husband Forbes Stephen Mitchell.
The couple lived together in the foothills of the Himalayas, and their first child, Heather, was born there in 1940.
The family moved back to the UK to Shrewsbury, Shropshire in 1943 during the second world war and their second child, John, was born there.
The family settled in Ampthill in Bedfordshire, and after Forbes passed away in 1996, Irene moved in with Heather in Newark.
She also has two grandchildren, Stephen and Stephanie, and two great-grandchildren Ellis and Harry.
She became the first resident of Lancaster Grange care home when the home opened in September 2013.
Irene said that she had a lovely time at her party.
Charlotte Widdison, activities co-ordinator, said: "Irene is really famous here at Lancaster Grange.
"She still comes out to the shops with us and and loves having her hair done, and she loves chocolate - she's a real girly girl and we all love her."
