Veterans in the district are being invited to a free breakfast as part of an event organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council.

The event will allow veterans and ex-service men and women to meet face to face in a relaxed, social and secure environment to have an informal chat and to find out about support services available to them.

The breakfast will start at 10am and will run until midday at Newark Town Hall on Tuesday, November 30.

Veterans gathered on the steps on Newark Town Hall behind the standards of the Royal British Legion and other military associations for Remembrance Day.

Veterans will be able to enjoy hot food and refreshments with deputy leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council and Armed Forces champion councillor Keith Girling.

Mr Girling said: “The Armed Forces play a vital role in the district and we are forever grateful for the service they provide in protecting our country.

“I encourage any veteran in the district to come down and meet with us. This is a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and find out about the support in our area.

“We remain committed to doing all we can to support those in the Armed Forces both in our district and in our own workforce, enabling them to have care and backing when they need it most.”

The Forest Forces programme, which has been developed by Nottingham Forest Community Trust, tackles social isolation in veterans by providing a variety of regular activities and events and is supporting Tuesday's breakfast.

Other partners will include Nottinghamshire County Council, Age UK, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, Dementia Carers, RFEA The Forces Employment Charity, Insight, Change Grow Live, SSAFA The Armed Forces Charity and Citizens Advice Sherwood and Newark.

The district council has made several commitments to the Armed Forces which has seen it achieve silver status in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.

The scheme acknowledges employers that support defence personnel, including reservists, veterans, wounded injured and sick, families and cadets.

Tuesday's event is casual dress, so veterans don’t need to wear berets or military dress, and attendees are asked to bring proof of identification.

To book a place, email communityengagement@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk or call 01636 650 000. Please also state your dietary requirements if needed.

If you are unable to attend this event and/or would like to be kept informed about support services available to veterans, as well as future events, please register your interest using the above contact.
