More than 70 people looked round the treasury at Newark Parish Church as part of an open afternoon, but were unable to climb the tower.

The church is open every day for worship but on Sunday the treasury was opened. It contains silver-plated items such as chalices, collection plates and communion sets.

The tower was also due to be open, but this was cancelled as it was unsafe because of wet weather.

A churchwarden, Miss Rita McCall, said they hoped to offer visitors an eagle’s eye view of the Newark Food and Drink Festival that was taking place in the Market Place.

“Before we open the tower we have to make sure we have enough volunteers to help because we need at least two people at a time up there for health and safety reasons,” she said.

“It is a shame the weather has been so bad.”

Mrs McCall said: “What might be quite interesting for people at the moment is that the weather vane and cockerel that were on top of the church are in the treasury because of damage to the spire.”
