A health centre in Newark will offer residents the coronavirus booster jab in the coming weeks — but they are in urgent need of volunteers to get started.

Newark Health Centre, on Portland Street, will offer the covid-19 booster vaccination through pharmacy group FirstCare Limited.

FirstCare has six pharmacies across the Midlands and three covid vaccination sites in Mansfield, Bullwell and Coventry.

They hope to began with their booster programme roll-out from December 13, but said it could open sooner should volunteer positions be filled.

“We have been vaccinating since January and we have administered over 50,000 covid vaccinations,” said operations manager Kate Bonar.

“We were approached by the NHS to open a site in Newark to ensure locals had easy access to this service.

“We have had people coming to us in Mansfield from Newark so we understand the situation.

“With Newark Showground’s vaccination centre no longer open there is definitely the need for this.”

Kate said there was no limit on the number of volunteers and asked those interested to come forward.

“We want to get the word out and appeal for volunteers,” she said.

“Anybody who previously worked at the Newark Showground would be perfect,” she said.

“We are looking for volunteer marshals, vaccinators and registered health care professionals to come and help us at our site.

“Anyone willing to offer their time and services please get in touch.”

Those interested can get involved by emailing river side-c19@outlook.com or calling 07795 090590.

"Great to see over 15 million vooster doses have now been given across the UK," said Newark MP Robert Jenrick.

"This is an important step to tackling the virus and keeping it at bay.

"Recently I spoke to the local CCG regarding booster doses and the roll-out in and around Newark.

"Although the vaccine centre at the showground has closed, I have been assured that with other sites across the constituency, especially the Brackenhurst campus outside Southwell delivering doses on the weekends, we are matching the roll-out speed when we had the showground site.

"However, to speed up the rollout even quicker, and after discussions with the local CCG, they have committed to opening another site soon, with work underway on this as we speak, making it easier for people to get this important top-up."
