Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide appeal for volunteers and venue to help launch new peer-to-peer support group in Newark
An appeal for volunteers has been launched to enable the formation of a peer-to-peer support group for people bereaved by suicide.
An organisation dedicated to offering peer-led support to adults impacted by suicide loss, Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SoBS) has an aim to set up a new support group in Newark.
The only UK charity of its type, SoBS helps those bereaved by suicide to support each other, at the time of their loss and in the months and years that follow.
Currently, its nearest groups are in Bassetlaw or West Bridgford, and it wants to extend the reach of its services — a safe and confidential environment for the sharing of experiences and feelings — to more people who may be in need.
Kate Bell, SoBS’ central region volunteer coordinator, said: “We are in the very early stages and we are looking for volunteers to help set up the group.
“Realistically we all experience bereavement of some kind in our lives, but unless you’ve experienced bereavement by suicide it is hard to understand.
“There’s stigma around suicide — although it gets better all the time — and it can be isolating. The groups offers people a chance to speak with others in a similar situation, have their feelings validated, and to not feel so isolated.”
Three trained volunteers are needed to set up a group. All must be over 18, and have been bereaved by suicide more than two years ago.
After the application and vetting process, prospective volunteers will complete e-learning modules and then an online video call training session to equip them with the necessary information and skills.
They will also be continually supported by SoBS, and have opportunity to connect with more experienced volunteers for advice and support.
“We ask that people are bereaved by a minimum of two years as they are generally further along in their journey, and feel able to support others,” Kate added.
“We want to make sure they feel they have the emotional strength for both their own loss and to hear about and support others. Its not something that’s easy, but its very rewarding.”

SoBS peer-to-peer support groups meet once a month in the evening, and a permanent venue is also sought for the planned Newark group.
Ideally this would be accessible by both car and public transport, and have some kitchen facilities to allow for tea and biscuits to be served to help attendees feel more comfortable.
SoBS also runs a support line, open everyday from 9am to 7pm, on 0300 111 5065, and email support via email.support@uksobs.org for those who prefer to write down their thoughts.
If you need support, Samaritans can be contacted on 116 123 for free, from any phone, or text ‘shout’ to 85258 for free, confidential support at any time.
