Volunteers to take on speeders

Residents are hoping to prevent road accidents in their village by setting up a Community Speedwatch scheme. Nine villagers have volunteered to monitor
in Rolleston.

They will be trained by the police to use hand held speed cameras to catch speeding motorists.

Police will send warning letters to those caught.

A member of Rolleston Parish Council, Mr Steve Short, said there was a problem with speeding in the village.

He said: “I think it is a problem because people are coming from a national speed limit area in to a 30mph zone and, like many other places, they just don’t slow down.

“The problem seems to be at certain times of the day and we’ve found that it is particularly bad on Sundays.”

Mr Short said the speed cameras would be used on Staythorpe Road and Fiskerton Road, where cars were often going at their fastest entering or leaving the village.

He said: “We’ve been lucky that we haven’t had any serious accidents but we have had a couple of cars end up in fields.

“I think Speedwatch will deter people from speeding and will be another warning to them that it is a 30mph zone because having signs at either end of the village doesn’t seem to be working.

“We think it’s obviously better to act and try to slow people down before something serious happens.”

The parish council chairman, Mr Alec Jezewski, said speeding was a problem that affected many people who live in the village.

He said: “Rolleston is a one road village and pretty much everybody lives along the same road so everyone is aware of the problem.

“It is a very long straight road and people tend to put their foot down but it has also got a very tight corner in the middle and if people aren’t careful they tend to take that quite wide, which isn’t very safe.

“There are only about 100 households in the village so getting nine volunteers for Speedwatch means we’ve got a good distribution of people and a real cross-section of residents.”
