Walking trail to be created in Rolleston in memory of 19th Century children's author Kate Greenaway
A walking trail is being designed to highlight the life and experiences of a popular Victorian author.
The Kate Greenaway Action Group in Rolleston aims to promote the connection between the village and 19th Century children’s author and illustrator Kate Greenaway.
The route will take visitors on a journey around the places of significance to her life, including the properties where she lived and stayed during her time in the village.
A trail map is also being developed for distribution in nearby tourist offices and other venues.
Pati Colman, chairman of the Kate Greenaway Action Group, said: “We are so fortunate to have Kate Greenaway’s legacy as part of the history of our village, not only because it is wonderful to have such a close connection with someone known and appreciated across the globe, particularly in the United States, but more significantly, because her illustrations capture something of what life was like here in Victorian times.
“We hope that this will be of interest to many people living in the area as Kate Greenaway refers in her journal to some of the surrounding villages and towns.”
The Kate Greenaway Action Group was formed in 2019 in response to the potential demolition of a house connected to the author.
They were given permission from Nottinghamshire County Council to put a commemorative plaque on the house at 18 Fiskerton Road.
Rolleston Parish Council has also re-named a green space in the village as The Kate Greenaway Garden, where a bench and flower boxes will be built.
Tim Harries, Rolleston Parish Council chairman, said: “We are aware and very supportive of the work that the Kate Greenaway Action Group are doing.
“Worldwide, there is significant interest in Kate Greenaway and I think that Rolleston is playing an important part in representing her life and what she did.”
