War work

I am 84 years old, born and bred in Newark. In 1944 I was nine years old.

My job, during the war, was every Friday morning to get up at 7am and go down to the Co-op on Middlegate to queue for a pork pie ­— which was a luxury.

On Saturdays I had to get up again at 7am and go to the old gasworks to get two bags of coke at 35d a bag.
