Southwell Town Councillors aiming to rejuvenate twinning scheme with Český Brod, in Czechia

After links with Southwell’s twinned town have dwindled over the years, two town councillors have joined forces to try and reunite their two towns.

Southwell has had a long association with Český Brod, a town in the centre of Czechia – formerly the Czech Republic – with a population of around 7,000 people.

The association was formed in 1990, at the fall of the Soviet Bloc, to support the country to move a more Western European culture.

Town councillors Jamie Bostock and Peter Harris are now hoping to rejuvenate the twinning scheme with Cesky Brod, which has fallen by the wayside in recent years, and want to get the whole town involved.

“We’d love to get as much youth engagement as possible,” Jamie said, “We want to arrange a sports tournament or music festival with our local teams and theirs to show what Southwell has to offer on a European stage.

“We want to show what Southwell has to offer and put us on the map in Europe. We have a huge amount of heritage and talent, and we want to share that with people across the world so people can come and see what our town has to offer.

“It’s a great opportunity for our clubs to go on tour with Český Brod, to have that experience of Czech culture.”

Jamie and Peter are now appealing to any sports groups, music clubs, or any youth organisations who would be interested in taking part in the exchange with Český Brod to get in touch.

“It would be good to get a network of people involved so we know who can help with what.

If anyone may be able to help with the exchanges — offers of host families, or anyone with local knowledge of Czechia — then you are also invited to contact Jamie by emailing cllrjamiebostock@southwell-tc.gov.uk or call 07758 444224.
