A proposal for a wind monitoring mast in a neighbouring field — as a precursor to a potential wind farm — has been approved by the district council.

The wind turbine issue certainly seems to divide opinion.

Those villagers behind a turbine installed in Hockerton a year ago hope it will make money this year that will go towards community projects.

An application for another in Halam was supported by the parish council and approved by Newark and Sherwood District Council.

In Beckingham, in North Kesteven, however, an action group has been set up to oppose plans for a turbine. There is more local opposition to plans for turbines in Thorpe and Carlton-on-Trent.

There’s no doubt that massive turbines change the face of the landscape but, as well as their visual impact, the main issue seem to be with the vagaries of the British climate because if the wind doesn’t blow, the turbines don’t turn and the question arises as to how much power is actually produced.

“Obviously the more wind we get the more money we’ll make so we’re hoping for a windy 2011,” says Mr Simon Tilley of the Sustainable Hockerton group.

So here we are again, talking about the weather and it s impact on our lives, but didn’t we used to wish for a long, hot summer?
