Severn Trent complete work to prepare Southwell sinkhole for repair, with road closure set to be in place for a week
Severn Trent have accepted responsibility for a town-centre sinkhole, and are set to begin repair works.
The sinkhole opened up a Market Place, Southwell, earlier this week, and was initially cordoned off by Nottinghamshire County Council’s highways incident response team, and three-way traffic lights put in place.
The road has since been closed fully, from the junction of the mini roundabout along the road to Prebend Passage, Westgate. The pavements remain open to pedestrians.
Daniel Borst, network operations lead at Severn Trent, said: “A team has been out to investigate the sinkhole at Market Place. We've cleared debris from the hole and can now start to make a repair.
“We understand roadworks can be inconvenient and our teams will be working hard to get this repair made and everything back to normal as quickly as possible.”
Severn Trent did not outline how long the repair is expected to take, but the Via East Midlands roadwork notice for the repair currently lists the road closure as being in place until 4pm on Friday, April 26.
A diversion route is in place via Westgate, Allenby Road, Queen Street, the Ropewalk and Lower Kirklington Road.
Nottingham City Transport’s 26 service through the town is also operating on a diversion route.
The operator stated: “Pathfinder 26 will operate the reverse of its outbound route via The Ropewalk, Queens Rd, Halam Rd, Allenby Rd and Westgate due to an incident in Southwell.
“Buses will be Hail and Ride whilst on diversion, please request the bus in plenty of time for the driver to stop safely.”
Investigation into the cause of the sinkhole is ongoing.
