The Plastic Ocean Show’s 18-metre-long replica whale, by Circo Rum Ba Ba theatre company, will return to Newark Market Place this August to coincide with the Newark On Sea urban beach organised by Newark Town Council and Newark and Sherwood District Council
This summer is shaping up to be a real scorcher with the return of a sell out show alongside a family favourite event.
The Plastic Ocean Show’s 18-metre-long replica whale will once again be making waves in Newark Market this summer after its initial run in April sold out in under 12 hours.
Taking place on Sunday, August 11, visitors will be able to step inside the giant animal and experience a funny and interactive puppet show, by the Circo Rum Ba Ba theatre company, highlighting the impact that plastic has on our environment.
Run in partnership between Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Town Council, the event will also coincide with the return of the hugely popular Newark-on-Sea urban beach, which brings all the fun of the seaside to the town centre, from Wednesday, August 7 to Monday, August 19.
The day of the show will also see an eco-friendly and sustainable market taking place, alongside stalls where charity groups can promote their work and raise awareness.
Council bosses hope that the event will encourage more visitors to visit the town and make a day of it, exploring Newark’s independent shops and eateries.
Matt Lamb, director of planning and growth at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “It was brilliant to see this event sell out so quickly back in April.
“To know that local people, especially young people, are interested in learning about these important subjects is really heartening.
“It’s always great to see our Market Place buzzing with excitement and activity and this is part of an ongoing ambition to host a range of events in the town.
“We are really delighted, in partnership with Newark Town Council, to be able to bring this show back alongside the amazing Newark-on-Sea beach this August.”
The show is suitable for ages 3 and over and to ensure that as many children as possible can enjoy it, those attending are kindly being asked to keep to one adult only per family.
Tickets for the event are free but limited, and will be released in three waves to manage demand.
The tickets will be made available at 10am on Monday July 1, July 15 and July 29 July through the Newark Palace Theatre website.
The show also aligns with the district council’s Motion for the Ocean, which pledges to improve our waterways, recognises the climate crisis that our ocean is facing, and acknowledges that local government has an essential role to play in environmental recovery.
