The Newark Advertiser asked people’s opinions on how to improve the parking situation in Newark and bring more people to the town centre
In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser asked about the town’s parking and if there was a way arrangements could be made to improve things and draw in more people.
Opinions varied from cheaper parking to to the first few hours being free, but everyone agreed on one thing: a solution is needed.
Neighbour towns of Southwell and Bingham have the first two hours of parking for free, which hasn’t gone unnoticed by people in Newark.
“They should have the first two hours free as they do in Southwell and in Bingham. It will certainly help bring more people into town,” said Denise Keiffer.
Karen Shannon said: “It should be made free for the first two hours and then the third hour around £1.50 or £2. Probably all parking in town to make it simpler because people come from all different directions into town.”
Nick Revell said: “All parking should be made free. My wife is disabled so we can park virtually anywhere but it should be free.”
Mr and Mrs Hindlsey said: “I wouldn’t say make it free but definitely lowering the prices. We don’t go to Lincoln anymore because we can’t afford the parking.”
Public carparks in town, owned by Newark and Sherwood District Council include Castle House, Tolney Lane and Riverside Arena. Short stay include Town Wharf, Appletongate and London Road/Baldertongate.
“Maybe if there was more decent shops in town people wouldn’t necessarily mind about paying for the parking but the way the shops are at the minute it’s not really worth it,” said Lindsey Jones.
Alison Pogson said: “Maybe having one day at week free, like market days would potentially be a good idea.”
Harriet Black said: “I think it should be made cheaper and a bit more space. I have gone to Asda because it’s two hours of free parking but there is not enough time, I am now gonna have to move my car to then come back. There’s nowhere to park in town that is accessible. Even to just go to the bank and get some money out. We need more parking!”
Leanne Pretlove: “I just parked and there wasn’t a board saying how much. I just got a ticket and will find out when I leave but if it was free parking people will come more because they don’t have to worry about time or prices.”
