The Newark Advertiser heard people’s opinions on new bins and lorries for food waste
In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser heard people’s opinions on the council's plans to introduce new food waste bins.
After the plans were discussed at a district council’s cabinet meeting this week, we went around Newark to hear what people think about it.
Hillary Price, who lives on her own, said that she doesn’t produce enough waste to make it worth having a waste bin, but despite it, she still recycles and tries to do her bit for the environment.
She added: “I do recycle, so I am not sure, but for people with children, it might be a good idea.”
John Smith said he can’t really see the point of the new bins: “If there’s a bit of waste, it can just go in the bin.”
Although the council has a statutory requirement to provide the service, residents will have the option to decline the 23 litre caddies, which are to be stored outside, while a five to seven litre countertop caddy is to be kept indoors.
Vincent Johson-Copper said: “We have got three bins already, I don’t think a new one is necessary.
“It all depends on how people eat and how much they leave.”
Melissa Powell said: “Do we have to buy the compostable waste bags? Because if we have to add that as an expense, then I see no perks.
“It might be good for the environment, but what about the smell it will leave in the kitchen and the rest of the house?”
Malcolm Wright agreed with the plans and believes it is a good idea.
On the other hand, Robert Harrison said that the plans were a ‘terrible idea’.
He added: “It’s a terrible idea, it will leave smells in the kitchen, and then it will attract animals and bugs, so I see no benefits but giving me extra work to do.”
The food waste lorries will make collections on a weekly basis and will be capable of running on treated vegetable oil, reducing carbon emissions.
John Carr, who said to support the idea, questioned why the lorries are able to collect the food waste weekly but won’t do the same for recycling and general waste.
