As COP29 takes place is Baku, Azerbaijan, the Newark Advertiser found out people’s opinions on climate change
As the COP29 is currently underway, we found out people’s views on climate change and what solutions could be considered.
Climate change has been in the public consciousness for several years now, be it in protests, on the news, or on a casual pub conversation.
This year’s COP29, also known as the Conference of the Parties, started on Monday (November 11) and will last until November 22 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
World leaders will discuss this year’s theme — In Solidarity for a Green World — with the main aims of limiting warming to below 1.5˚C, enhancing ambition, enabling action, and ensuring an inclusive process.
We went around Newark town centre to hear what people think about climate change, and if they believe and fear it.
Rina Ozolins said: “Yes, climate change needs addressing, but you can do your own part individually. But It needs to be a worldwide effort for it to make any difference whatsoever.”
Sue Gibson said: “The solution is to take notice of what research has been done and what measurements have been taken and all the science.”
David Gibson added: “The thing that will kill it is cars and even though we drive a car, cars are the problem.
“We won’t give up our cars and until we give up our cars, no chance.”
Sarah Wilson said: “I don’t believe in climate change. I think it is natural unlike what people say on the papers.
“I don’t read the news about it anymore, I try to avoid it.”
Karl Brown said: “I think we are doing quite a lot about climate change in this country.”
Eileen Farmer said: “I think it is all caused by the Government pushing all the stupid stuff into the atmosphere basically.”
Peter Cochrane: “I think Donald Trump is going to have a big say on what happens, things are going to change. How I don’t know.”
Denise Cochrane added: “Things have got to change.”
