With the new year a host of stories have appeared in the newspapers about the greatest challenges that our Labour government will have to face and overcome.

Hidden under all the justifiable protests about winter fuel allowance, inheritance tax for farmers and a slew of other horrors comes the quiet announcement that local elections may well be postponed ‘for up to a year’ in the counties of Kent, Essex, Sussex and Lancashire.

How curious that these are all areas where the Conservatives and Reform are expecting to break Labour’s grip on power!
