May 16, 1997

THE Mount School, Newark, has made it a hat-trick of wins in the Newark and Sherwood area road safety quiz.

A team of 12 pupils beat five other teams to record their third consecutive win in the competition.

NEWARK scooped a £525,000 National Lottery jackpot to help restore the castle grounds to its former glory as a Victorian-style park.

And in a double boost for the town, the green light has been given for the creation of Riverside Park on the facing bank of the Trent, to include a grassed amphitheatre for artistic and musical performances.

HEALTH bosses have been accused of dragging their feet over the release of the former Balderton Hospital site for redevelopment into a 1,150-home village.

Newark and Sherwood District Council sees the 144-acre site as key to providing new houses into the next century.

A NIGHTCLUB owner has denied claims that his customers are to blame for rowdiness and litter in the Baldertongate and Barnbygate areas of Newark.

Mr Tom Kershaw, owner of Gino’s club in Baldertongate, said he had done everything possible to make sure there were no problems.

THE NSK-RHP Ransome Band qualified for this year’s British Open Brass Band Championships by finishing second in the 77th Spring Brass and Festival at Bolton.

The band is in its 60th year.

WORTHINGTON-SIMPSON LTD is back in production. The wheels are turning to catch up with a backlog of orders after a six-week strike by more than 600 shop floor workers.

The agreement gives an all-round increase of £2.80 for a 40-hour week for all workers over 20. There are proportional increases for apprentices.

A HANDS-OFF our elms petition signed by about 22 residents of the Valley Prospect estate at Newark has been sent to the town clerk.

The town council is planning to topple two stately elms to make way for a new football pitch.

But the Valley Prospect residents are prepared to mount a 24-hour guard to defend the 200-year-old elms on Devon Park.

A CONSTANT stream of visitors looking in on sick relatives and friends got on the nerves of some of the patients at Newark Hospital.

So, after experimenting with unlimited visiting between 2pm and 8pm, the hospital has gone back to its old visiting homes of 7pm-8pm with afternoon visiting on Wednesday to Sunday.

FOURTEEN records tumbled and one was equalled in the Newark and District Secondary Schools Athletics Association sports at Grove Sports Centre, Balderton.

Newark Lilley and Stone Girls’ School swept the board in the girls’ trophies, winning all three age groups and the relay trophy.

100 YEARS AGO

May 17, 1922

THE first annual training of the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry since the outbreak of war commenced on Friday when the regiment went into camp at Babworth Park.

The regiment is at full strength with 16 officers and 248 non-commissioned officers and men.

FLANNELS and rackets, bats and boats, all betoken that at last summer is with us again. Bowls too has recommenced at the castle gardens.

A marked enthusiasm characterised the debut, and everyone was completely satisfied with the condition of the playing piece.

A REPORT of the fire brigade committee was presented to a meeting of Southwell Parish Council, which showed there had been no fires during the year.

The monthly practice of the brigade had been well attended and much interest taken in the work.

The hose was in good condition and ready for immediate use.

It is hoped that before long a better engine and a more suitable building than the present fire station would be forthcoming.

THE initial open-air concert of the season given by Newark United Silver Band in the grounds of the White House, Millgate, was a distinct success and a fair crowd gathered to hear an excellent programme.

MESSRS Edward Bailey and Son offered for sale at the Kirkgate Sale Room Beaumond House, London Road, Newark.

It was sold for £1,350 to Messrs Hole and Co, brewers of Newark.

A cottage at Elston went to Mrs Tyler, of Lincoln, for £300.
