The Newark Advertiser found out what are people’s go to chippy across the area
As today marks National Fish and Chips Day, we found out what people think is the best chippy around the area and what sauce suits it the best.
The first Friday of June celebrates the iconic British dish of fish and chips, and today, it coincides with the 10th anniversary of the day, according to the National Federation of Fish Friers.
As Newark has a vast number of chippies, including award-winning ones, we heard where the best fish and chips in the area.
Both Angells Fisheries on Barnbygate and Appleton Gate Fish Bar on Appletongate have received several mentions from the people we spoke to, proving to be the most popular ones.
But what sauce goes best with fish and chips? We asked people if they were fans of mushy peas, curry sauce, gravy, or what other sauces tickles their fancy.
Friends Sheila Merriman and Mary Aldrich agreed that their favourite chippy was Appleton Gate Fish Bar as it is the ‘tastiest fish and chips around’, especially with mushy peas, they said.
Ewan Bramwell said: “The best for me is Angells [Angells Fisheries] without a doubt, you taste the quality and you get what you pay for.
“All the awards it has got are very well deserved.”
Charlie said that his favourite was Angells Fisheries on Barnbygate as it has won a lot of awards nationally and the “taste, flavour and presentation is top”.
He said he usually goes for mushy peas as it is his favourite.
Elisabeth Spray said: “We always go to the Fish King at North Hykhem because it is always perfectly cooked and they wrap it properly so it is really nice and warm when you get it home.
“It is a treat, and curry sauce goes perfectly with fish, so I always go for it without a doubt.”
Tony Joyce said he prefers his fish and chips just as they are, as he is not big on sauce.
He added: “They chippy I like the most is the one on London Road [A1 Fish Bar] because it is always freshly cooked, the batter is absolutely superb and the ladies behind the counter are lovely, so I always go there.
Gainor Hall said: “My favourite is the chippy on Cliff Nook Lane [Appleton Gate Fish Bar] because they are the best fish and chips.
“I definitely go for mushy peas, it is not fish and chips without mushy peas.”
Like Stokes said that her got to fish and chips place that used to be the former Bentley’s Fish on Middlegate until it closed doors. Despite her favourite chippy having closed down, her go to sauce is curry sauce.
