The Advertiser heard about people’s opinions on plans to have a Sainsbury’s supermarket on former Homebase, on Northgate, Newark

In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser found out what people think of the plans for a new Sainsbury’s and what could replace it if refused.

Plans for a new Sainsbury's at the former Homebase store on Northgate Retail Park are facing opposition from Newark Town Council following a discussion at a recent planning meeting.

Councillors raised concerns over traffic management and safety in the area, however, they offered their support to the principle of the supermarket giant providing a new shop within the area in a different location.

Following the suggestion, we went to hear what people had to say about it and what they would rather see instead of the supermarket, and Primark was one of the big names mentioned.

Jackie Kingsley said: “It would be nice if they had a Primark but they will never have a Primark in Newark because of all the other shops because Primark sells cheap clothes and it would be a competition.

“But I would rather it being a Sainsbury’s than they turning it into housing.”

Joanne Lanes said: “I don’t Sainsbury’s because I don’t like it so I think there are plenty of other shops that are needed.

“Maybe we could have more charity shops or second-hand furniture shops because people can’t afford furniture at the moment.

“I think three are enough food stores in Newark, we don’t need anymore.”

Babs Turner said: “I would rather see a Primark because there aren’t many clothing shops in Newark.”

John Clark said: “The worst for me is the traffic so if it will make it worse then I don’t know how I feel about it.

“As for other shops I am not concerned what comes next.”

Elanine Leary said: “I don’t object to the plans, I am not a driver so I don’t think that would affect me.

“I wouldn’t dislike seeing Sainsbury’s there but there aren’t any other shops that I am bothered about because for me it is a long way to walk, but I would like to see more shops in the centre instead.”

Helen Nulls said: “There are plenty of supermarkets, that is a nice option but the traffic situation isn’t the best, but we would never say no to a Sainsbury’s because the other one is quite far away.”

Andy Brown said: “Considering the supermarket wouldn’t be very big I’m not sure if the traffic problems would be worth it.”

Andy Morris said: “I think we have got plenty of supermarkets in Newark.

Tony Morris added: “I am worried that it is detracting from the town centre when we are trying to encourage people to use the market and local shops.

“Am I for it? I have nothing against Sainsbury’s but I am not sure.”

Lynn Mallender said: “I absolutely love Sainsbury’s, I got to the one in Balderton but it just isn’t big enough.

“We can go a different way out of the Retail Park, you don’t have to go out that way and you can avoid the traffic.”

The final decision will be made by Newark and Sherwood District Council who will decided whether to grand a change of use or not.
