Reader's letter: White Paper not the answer
Congratulations to Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust for the excellent Country File article, Concern At Impact Of Reform on Young People.
The article points to the many reasons why the proposals in Robert Jenrick’s Housing White Paper must be rejected.
Already the planning system is acknowledged to favour developers.
We currently have some say when a Local Plan is developed and when a planning application is submitted, but whether our representations have any impact is already constrained by overwhelming government controls on the planning system.
The White paper proposes to rob us of our say.
It argues we need a system where developers can proceed “unhindered” by local approval to build “quality” homes.
This flies in the face of a reality where developers’ proposals consistently have to be rejected by the council on the basis of poor design, poor standards, and designs that are not appropriate to the area.
The White Paper assumes that what we need are more planning permissions rather than more houses.
In truth, if all the sites where planning permission has already been approved were actually brought to fruition, around Newark and nationally, we would have a housing surplus.
The White Paper is nothing more than a payback to an industry that has funded the Conservative Party. — JOHN FREEMAN, Tinsley Close, Claypole.
