Reader's letter: Who is in favour?

More news, no ads

I was one of, I guess, around 150 protestors who attended the annual meeting of Balderton Parish Council to protest against the YMCA’s plans to develop Balderton Lake as a site for kayaking.

I have spent many years reporting on local councils as a journalist and am a former Newark town councillor. In all my years of attending council meetings, I have never witnessed a bigger show of public opposition to any council-approved scheme. I am used to annual meetings where you are lucky if half a dozen public attend.

So I was astonished when, towards the end of the meeting, a councillor voiced her approval of the proposals and declared that she represented “all the people of Balderton, all 7,500 of them, and not just the few who are here tonight.”

The few? The councillor offered not a shred of evidence that many or most Balderton residents are in favour of this development.

Public opposition at the meeting was unanimous. The arrogance of assuming that, in the face of this massed opposition, unknown others would all be in favour, was as surprising as it was unjustified and ridiculous. — G. KEAL, Balderton.
