Ahead of International Women’s Day the Advertiser found out who are people’s female heroes

In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser find out who are the women who inspire people across town.

Ahead of International Women’s Day (March 8), we went around Newark town centre to find out more about the women who are or were in people’s lives that inspire them every day.

Answers varied from mothers and romantic partners to famous singers and politicians, however everyone had a reason behind why they admired these women.

“My mum because she is a single mother and she has always been there and she is a very hard-working woman,” said Elisabeth Price.

Elisabeth’s mother, Beryl Price shared her own opinion: “I would say my mum too, she had 11 children and she will be turning 80 this year and she has done a lot for everyone else, not just herself.”

Bringing politics into the conversation, Elisabeth Mumby said that her female hero was Margaret Thatcher. She added: “With the way the world is at the moment, I think that many people would wish we had Margaret Thatcher back to deal with these men.”

With the same line of thought of strong women who changed the world, Kevin Baxter said: “Boudica is such a strong person and nothing ever daunted her.”

However, his wife, Linda Baxter had a different opinion: “I would say my daughter, she is determined, confident, knows where she is going and gets exactly what she wants.”

Eugene Clarke said that scientist Marie Curie was his inspiring woman of choice.

He added: “She was a brilliant scientist and a lot of other people got credited for her work, she gets side-lined a lot.

“There were also that handful of nameless brilliant women who calculated the trajectories for NASA space missions, by hand and in their head, and we don’t even know their names.

“They were black which means they wouldn’t get credited.”

His friend, Paul Saddington, agreed that in the past men often took credit for women’s work. He chose female country singer Dolly Parton: “Using her own words – I ain’t dumb and I ain’t blonde either but she is quite a successful woman in her own ways.

“She has done a lot of books for children and humanitarian work as well.

International Women’s Day is an annual celebration to recognise women's achievements and to advocate for gender equality.

It's a day to call attention to the barriers that women face and to celebrate the progress that's been made towards gender equality.

“My wife has done a cracking job in bringing up our children and she has done it for over 40 years and that is why I would say she is a hero,” said Derek Wing.

Mark Sullivan, whose wife owns LYB Melts & More Ltd on Cartergate, said that his wife inspired him because of the business she owns and how creative and passionate she is.
