Newark, Southwell and Caunton Tennis Club all return to competitive action
Competitive tennis returned with a local derby as Newark and Southwell went head-to-head in the Notts LTA Winter League.
Newark’s men’s 1st opened their Division Seven account with a loss as Southwell’s first-teamers were 25-23 winners.
Sam Smith and James Lalyk (6-6, 8-4) and Rich Hall and Gary Brickles (3-9, 6-6) represented Newark.
Sunday then saw Newark back in action again, this time hosting Nottingham Tennis Centre, of the National League.
The standard of play was high from the beginning and Newark’s Todor Malinov secured two early points for the team, winning his tie break.
Rich Hall failed to take any points (1-6, 6-7) but Gary Brickles (7-6, 6-1) earned revenge, winning his games by the same score.
Edgars Barvinskis couldn’t avoid a tie break third set following his 4-6 loss and 6-2 win.
Malinov and Barvinskis paired up and took their doubles sets on a tie break set winning 5-7, 6-1.
Hall and Brickles failed to match that success losing 0-6, 1-6.
Malinov and Hall then returned to the single’s court where they won 13-11 and 10-8 respectively as Newark secured an overall 8-6 win.
Caunton Tennis Club’s Oliver Melady (right) was also in action.
The 11-year-old won the grade four event at Derby David Lloyd’s under-12 tournament.
In a pool of 16 players he went undefeated and won the final in two straight sets, taking his winning run to three successive tournaments since moving from under-tens to under-12s.
