Former Southwell City footballer Matthew rushed to her side and had been living with her in China since the diagnosis in October - but his wife died on Thursday, March 28.

The healthcare system in China operates on a fee basis and Gwen was too ill to travel to the UK for further treatment.

Matthew organised a GoFundMe campaign to help with treatment costs and a fundraising football match was held by his old club Southwell City to raise money and more than £1,200 was raised.

The couple set up a Facebook page where people could show support and follow the journey of her cancer treatment.

A minute’s silence was respected before the match at the recent Blue Stripe Derby on Easter Monday which took place between Southwell City and Newark Town.
