Women urged to run for hospice

A women-only sponsored sprint, stride or stroll takes place at Newark Showground in July to raise money for Beaumond House Community Hospice.

The 5km Sunflower Run For Fun is being held on July 14 in response to Cancer Research UK’s decision to pull the Race For Life event out of Newark.

It is hoped more than 500 women will take part to help to raise at least £10,000 for the hospice.

Sponsorship from Newark Showground, Saks of Newark, LA Fitness, Inspired By Print, Sunpro and Boundary Sound means all the money raised will go to the hospice.

Everyone who completes the event will receive a goody bag, a medal and a certificate.

There will be prizes for the individual and team that raise the most sponsorship and the best-dressed individual and team. Gifts will be presented to women who raise £25, £50 or more than £100 in sponsorship.

The hospice provides supportive palliative care for patients with life-limiting or terminal illnesses and their families.

About 70% of the patients have a cancer-related illness, and it also cares for people with Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis.

Mr Wil Chung, the hospice’s fundraising and marketing manager, said: “I understand that many people were disappointed by the national charity pulling out and the ladies of Newark wanted an event to replace it.

“The great thing about raising money for a local charity is that you know exactly how it is spent and can see the real difference that it makes within the community.”

The 5km Race For Life took place in Newark for three years. Cancer Research UK pulled out of the town because it wanted to focus on bigger events in Lincoln, Nottingham and Worksop.

Registration for the Sunflower Run For Fun costs £10. Forms are available at Beaumond House, LA Fitness, Saks or online at www. beaumondhouse.co.uk
