Reader's letter: Words of caution

I am naturally pleased that Nottinghamshire has been given a sizeable government grant for schemes to encourage cycling and walking (One-way System Could Pave Way For Cycle Lane, Advertiser, December 10).

However, in the case of a possible one-way system using Victoria Street, Portland Street and Albert Street I would advise extreme caution.

One-way systems are known to lead to increased vehicle speeds and hence road safety problems.

They often generate rat-running through unsuitable streets to avoid the restrictions, can cause very real access problems for residents and businesses, and lead to greater distances travelled by vehicles and hence additional emissions.

Not a “no no” but very much a case of being extremely careful what you wish for. — BOB HART, Fairway, Newark
