Reader's letter: Words of caution
I am naturally pleased that Nottinghamshire has been given a sizeable government grant for schemes to encourage cycling and walking (One-way System Could Pave Way For Cycle Lane, Advertiser, December 10).
However, in the case of a possible one-way system using Victoria Street, Portland Street and Albert Street I would advise extreme caution.
One-way systems are known to lead to increased vehicle speeds and hence road safety problems.
They often generate rat-running through unsuitable streets to avoid the restrictions, can cause very real access problems for residents and businesses, and lead to greater distances travelled by vehicles andhence additional emissions.
Not a “no no” but very much a case of being extremely careful what you wish for. — BOB HART, Fairway, Newark
