Newark and Sherwood District Council to progress local heritage list

Work can now progress to create a local heritage list for Newark and Sherwood.

The district council has adopted a new criteria for identifying non-designated heritage assets and as a result the conservation team can now begin a three-year project to assess potential assets.

It follows a public consultation.

The Nottingham building, the former White Hart Hotel, was named on Historic England's Heritage at Risk register in November last year.

The new criteria outlines heritage assets must have an historic, archaeological, architectural or artistic interest — which must also have a degree of significance either through its rarity, representativeness, aesthetic appeal, integrity or association with groups of individuals in the past.

Through a consistent and accountable way of identifying heritage assets, property owners and developers will be able to determine what is or is not a heritage asset.

Going forward, the local heritage list will be updated and approved by members for the public to view.

Keith Girling, economic development committee chairman, said: “By adopting this new criteria for identifying non-designated heritage assets, the district council can protect and ensure effective management of our heritage assets to best sustain their significance.

“Additionally, it now enables our conservation team to begin the important work of creating a local heritage list. This will help us to contribute to our knowledge and sense of place and promote pride within communities across the district.”

Members of the committee were unanimous in their support.
