Newark 71 Tamworth 15: Regional 2 North Midlands match report as wing Henry Allen scores hat-trick of tries
Newark Rugby Club’s first team produced their best display of the season by posting 11 tries in a 71-15 win over Tamworth at Kelham Road.
It was Newark’s second win of the season from six league games and lifted the team into a healthier sixth position in Regional 2 North Midlands.
From the moment wing Henry Allen swept in for the first of his three tries, Newark were in charge and never allowed Tamworth back into the match.
Allen, who has come through Newark’s mini and youth set-up, has seized his chance this season and his nippy pace brought the first two tries in a quick start which left Tamworth deflated.
Some 75 minutes later, Allen scored the last try to complete his treble and a resounding win.
After Allen had scored the first two tries, full-back Noah Catley contributed two while one each came from fly-half George Leeson, No 8 Sean Denning and wing Alex Scott.
To Tamworth’s credit, they clung on and engineered a try from short range just before the half-time whistle to make it 45-10.
The second half did not produce the same quality though Newark scored four tries to one from Tamworth.
Front-rowers Tommy Williams and Harry Wright grabbed a share of the limelight by scoring tries in between one for centre Matt Walton and, finally, Allen’s third. In all, Leeson kicked eight conversions.
Newark travel to Ilkeston this Saturday and should take strength from a good afternoon of attacking rugby.
Newark 2nds, who host Ashby this Saturday at Kelham Road (kick-off 3pm), had a tough trip to Birstall, losing 46-12 with tries came from Rhys Overland and Jamie Vinters.
However, the club’s colts team remain unbeaten after defeating Ilkeston 41-0 on Sunday. Centre Lenny Coen contributed three tries and Dan Woodward two. Nathan Churchill and Luis Pessoa also scored.
Three tries from wing Emilie Rathbone were the highlight of Newark’s women’s defeating Retford 39-5. Ella Turlukowsky and Kathrine Robinson also contributed tries.
