Newark Town manager Luke Parsons reflects on 2-2 draw with United Counties League bottom side Kimberley Miners Welfare

Defender Luke Andersen is starting to have some fun at the forwards’ expense after scoring another goal for Newark Town.

The centre-half grabbed his eighth of the season with a 96th-minute equaliser against Kimberley Miners Welfare as the Blues earned a draw from 2-0 down on Saturday.

Matteo Perkins launched the Blues’ latest comeback before Andersen’s header rescued a point.

“Ando again - incredible, isn’t it?” said manager Luke Parsons.

“It’s going to get to that stage soon where if we need a goal I’m going to have to take a striker off and chuck him up front!

“He’s never had anything to gloat about when it comes to goals before this season but he’s enjoying winding them up.

“I think he’s going to have to start working on some celebrations. Normally he just runs away and jumps up with his fist but he’ll have to start planning some.

“I still think he gets a nosebleed when he’s up there.”

Newark, who remain fifth in United Counties League Premier Division North, ran into an inspired goalkeeper in Kimberley’s Tom Smith.

He took the visitors’ man-of-the-match award after pulling off a string of fine saves.

Newark kept going and earned a point but Parsons could only praise Smith’s performance.

He said: “The keeper’s probably had one of the best performances I’ve seen live. He was saving everything.

“Don’t get me wrong, there was some poor finishing by us as well but on another day we could have scored seven and no one would have batted an eyelid.

“Unfortunately we came up against a keeper who was absolutely superb and didn’t deserve to be on a team that dropped points.

“We just didn’t have our shooting boots on either.”

Newark conceded against the run of play to Kimberley’s only real attempt of the first half.

And they trailed 2-0 after a mix-up defending a free-kick early in the second half.

But Perkins got them back in business before Andersen’s late show secured a share of the spoils.

“Again, we’re talking about what character we’ve shown to get back in the game,” said Parsons.

“The keeper made a really good save before we scored, and then we finally scored and we thought, ‘Do you know what, there is something here for us’.

“We had a one-on-one which the keeper saved, we had a double chance where we’ve headed it top corner and he’s somehow got to that and then we had one where the keeper saved it, it’s rebounded to our player and it’s kind of hit him on the shin.

“Then we had a one-on-one that’s rebounded to our player with an open goal and he’s put it wide.

“You’re on the sidelines thinking this just isn’t going to be our day, it’s just not going to happen.

“Even I started to question it and I’m always the one that believes we’ll get something.

“In the end we popped up and scored from the last kick of the game.”
