The final outing of the season ended with smiles as Newark Castle Archers picked up numerous top finishes.

Competing at Sherwood Archers’ annual western competition in Southwell, Newark earned two first-place finishes.

Junior member Kyan Jones, 9, (left), shot four dozen attempts from both 20 and 30 yards and finished first, while senior member Robert Hansen registered the highest score in the men’s barebow, which was shot from 50 and 60 yards, and like the juniors, saw four dozen arrows shot from each distance.

Their finishes were closely followed by 13-year-old Taylor Freshney (right) and senior members Steve Pepper and Mandie Elson (centre), who all achieved a silver medal finish.

Elson was second in the ladies’ barebow with, recording a new personal best, with team-mate Jo Fleming following in third.

Pepper competed in the male longbow.

“There was a strong field of archers coming from various counties and clubs, so the results were very impressive for our juniors and gives us a great future,” said Elson, chairman of the Newark Castle Archers.

She said the successful end to the outdoor season may inspire other juniors to take up the sport and achieve further success for the club.
