South Nottinghamshire get a big 7-3 win against Beeston while Newark also has success on the hockey pitch




After a goalless game at the half-time break, Newark Hockey Club’s men’s 2nd team won the match 3-1 against Belper.

The first half saw the Newark side hold on defensively before they came out swinging in the second-half and put the game away demonstrating resilience.

The Newark Ladies put in a great performance to defeat North Notts 6-1.

Braces by Lucy Wade and Laura Harriss saw the Newark sidewalk off the pitch with an impressive scoreline.

The South Nottingham Ladies team took part in a highscoring game as they won 7-3 against Beeston.

The Mighty Bees started strong and netted first as they put South Notts on the back foot.

Evie Bates soon ghosted through the Beeston defence to score a subtle but decisive equaliser.

With the game’s ebb and flow, Beeston failed to notice and mark tightly South’s ever-dangerous,

lurking Becky Humfris.

She took fast advantage of this lapse to give South Notts the lead and make it 2-1.

Then South’s Ruby Ryan rocketed in from the wing and rattled Beeston’s backboard to increase the lead to 3-1.at half-time

Beeston surged out after play resumed, with a well-crafted goal to close the gap to 3-2 and make it a contest.

This gave ever-increasing determination to Souths who did not buckle.

Lucy Lloyd picked up a clever through ball from Caroline Brackenbury and skilfully danced her way

through Beeston defenders to make it 4-2 .

Then Sophie Runciman, after a well-crafted 9 phase attack, started by Sophie Atkinson, powered her way through a series of vigorous tackles and rifled the ball into the near corner to put the score to 5-2.

Beeston were not out and came back with a brilliant set-piece goal to stay in the game at 5-3.

From there Alex Stevenson scored a brilliant goal by beating the Beeston Keeper before Evie Bates scored another to take the final score to 7-3.

South’s Captain Eleanor Wallace said: “The goals were a sign of how committed we were during the match.

“The result was a priceless 3 points against a really good opponent.

“Despite the score line, the match was fairly evenly balanced throughout.”

Newly promoted South Nottingham are now sitting in fifth place in their division.
