Newark’s Kate Else and Stuart College were among those to receive recognition at the England Athletics Regional Volunteer Awards.

Newark Athletic Club’s Else won the services to athletics or running award and, like her club mate Emma Jessop has now been entered to the national awards.

Else, who has been involved at the club for more than 50 years, said it was a huge honour.

Gareth Bagguley, club president, said: “I have been fortunate to have known Kate from when she first joined Newark AC aged 13 in the early 70s.

“Initially she thought she was a sprinter but soon realised middle distance was her forte, and she held the women’s 800m and 1,500m for many years.

“As she got older the distances increased and she tackled the marathon.

“She represented the club at county and national level.”

College finished as runner-up in the services to athletics or running category.

College led the online coaching programmes for Newark through lockdown.

He said: “I just got down and did it.

“Some of the athletes were less keen, but you could see the improvement just by them doing it out on their own, not needing a club environment.

“It didn’t matter whether they were international or beginners, it was good to see enthusiasm and I gave 100% for them.”
