South Nottinghamshire League Division A round-up: Balderton beaten off penultimate ball, Southwell still searching for first win
Balderton lost to Kirkby Portland by five wickets in South Nottinghamshire League Division A on Saturday - with defeat coming off the penultimate ball.
Chale Neshaharan fell to a four-ball duck but fellow opener Ryan Charlesworth made 36, with five boundaries, while Shalith Fernando top-scored with 44 off 55 balls in a total of 168-6.
Aaron Charlesworth and Rex Whitehurst reduced Kirkby to 37-2 but a third-wicket stand of 76 got them moving and they snatched victory with a ball to spare in the reduced 30-over match.
Balderton 2nds’ Division G struggles continued in a 23-run defeat by Wymeswold, leaving them 20 points from safety.
Sam Ross returned figures of 3-37 while Kieran Wiffin took 2-22 as Wymeswold reached 156-7 in 28 overs.
Opener Alan Jackson hit seven fours in a knock of 50 as Balderton looked to keep up with the rate.
But their victory hopes were hit when he was dismissed and they closed short on 133-6.
Collingham & District 3rds moved level on points with opponents Hoveringham in Division L.
Captain Tom Mason top-scored with 67, sharing an opening stand of 80 with Neil Puri, as Collingham reached 181-7 after 36 overs.
They won by 26 runs after holding Hoveringham to 155-9 in reply thanks to two wickets apiece for Noah James, Lewis Biggin and Sumit Puri.
Collingham & District 4ths were bowled out for 67 in a seven-wicket Division N defeat by Coddington & Winthorpe.
They were soon 11-2 and wickets continued to fall, with Stanley Chapman (13) and Arthur Davis (12) the only players to make double figures.
Chapman claimed 2-2 in two overs but Coddington eased to victory in the 12th over.
Southwell remain winless at the foot of South Nottinghamshire League Division D after a final-ball defeat against Ellerslie.
Hosts Southwell batted well with William Rimmer hitting eight boundaries in a knock of 50 off 66 balls, while Sam Barber made 45 and Mark Bowie 42 to help their side post 208-6 in 36 overs.
It appeared to be a competitive total and they were well in the game with Josh Evans returning 4-38.
But there was disappointment at the death as Ellerslie completed a three-wicket victory from the last ball.
Farndon are going well in fifth place after a seven-wicket success at Clifton Village 2nds.
Clifton were soon in trouble at 29-4 and did well to reach 143-8 in the face of good bowling from Charlie Thorpe (3-19), John Esam (2-26) and Jack Swallow (2-31).
Sam Hill made a seven-ball duck but Sam Brown anchored the chase with a composed 68 off 82 balls, including seven fours and a six. Alex Youngman (37) also contributed as Farndon eased home.
In Division J, Farndon 2nds lost to West Bridgfordians 4ths by six wickets.
Captain Bryn Martin hit 28 of his 34 runs in boundaries while William Wallis took the opposite approach, making a gritty 21 off 61 balls in Farndon’s total of 141-6.
Mark Everington (2-17) reduced West Bridgfordians to 21-2 early on but the visitors rallied, losing only two more wickets.
Southwell 2nds suffered a heavy defeat by 126 runs in their Division K match at Basford Mill 2nds.
Joshua Ingram made an early breakthrough on his way to 3-43 and Conor Cherry (2-46) also made an impact as Basford were held to 199-7.
Captain Kevin Brown made 32 at the top of Southwell’s reply, hitting five fours, but they collapsed to 73 all out inside 26 overs.
