Boxers aim to put on a show for home town
Youngsters from Newark Amateur Boxing Club will compete in the club’s first ever home show next month.
The event at Farndon Memorial Hall on February 10 will feature 11 local fighters aged 11 to 26.
Fighters who will be representing the club on the card are Alfie Briggs-Price, Troy Christie, Sam Hardy, Louis Clark, Adam Robb, Brandon O’Dowd, Megan Williams, Matthew Kennedy, Jade Grierson, Connor Meanwell, and George McMillan.
They will be matched against opponents from eight other amateur clubs in the region.
Camp Detox ABC, Terry Allen Unique ABC, Bracebridge Boxing Club, Selby Boxing Academy, Tamworth Amateur Boxing Club, Jawid Khaliq Boxing Academy and Mighty Mick’s Boxing Club will all send boxers.
'A significant step forward for the club'
Dean Sugden, head coach at Suggy’s Gym, said the show would benefit the club.
“Helping to shape the future of the town’s next generation of fighters is something that has always been important to us,” he said.
“NABC is going from strength to strength right now, inspired no doubt in part by the success of our professional fighters, and this home show is a significant step forward for the club and its members.
“Promoting an event that features some of Newark’s best young prospects not only raises the club’s profile, it is our way of rewarding those taking part for the effort they have put into their training.
“We are giving them a well-deserved chance to showcase the skills they have been developing and encouraging them to keep up the good work.”
There was further encouragement for the club on Saturday, when 22-year-old Michael Lindsay returned to the ring for the first time in five years.
'Jack said he really hopes he doesn’t see Mikey again'
He showed no sign of ring rust with a win over Fusion Amateur Boxing Club’s Jack Butler by a unanimous points decision.
“Although he was up against a strong opponent in Jack, Mikey’s dominant performance throughout the bout meant the result was never in doubt,” Sugden said.
“After the fight, the Fusion camp told me Mikey reminded them of Frank Bruno and even Jack said he really hopes he doesn’t see Mikey again.”
Next month’s home show is a ticket-only event and is already close to a sell-out.
Doors open at 5.30pm, with the first bell at 6.15pm.
Tickets are on sale from Suggy’s Gym, Castlegate, in Newark or by calling 07415 313749 or 01636 605708.
