Canter given a rematch

Amateur boxer Dan Canter will be given a rematch after a controversial split-decision loss.

The 17-year-old, of Newark, who fights out of Epic Golden Gloves Boxing Club boxer, was beaten by Yusif Ibrahim in Northampton.

Fighting for the East Midlands Youth 56kg belt, he started well and edged the first round.

Canter was a clear winner in the second, but his opponent improved in the final round to be in contention.

Both camps believed Canter had won, but were shocked when Ibrahim was given the split decision loss.

A rematch has been agreed for February 2.

Canter said: “Unfortunately it was one of those days.

“I am very pleased to have got a rematch and I will beat him next time.

“He fought very well but when I am at my best he won’t be on my level.”

Another future prospect at Epic Golden Gloves club, Newark’s Danny Steele, was victorious in his Youth ABA Championships bout against Leon Smith.

His opponent proved to be a tough competitor, but Steele showed his class to beat Smith in every round for a unanimous decision.

He said: “It wasn’t my most difficult fight but he was an awkward opponent who took a bit of figuring out.

“I managed to win every round and am pleased with my performance. Now I am looking forward to my next fight.”

Steele will next face fellow youngster Billy Wentworth for the chance to feature in a showcase in the finals of the ABA Championships at Doncaster Dome in February.

Balderton’s Charlie Pearson, fighting for South Normanton Amateur Boxing Club, won through to the next round of the championships with a split decision win.

Canter and Fred Hardy, also of Newark but fighting for Scunthorpe Amateur Boxing Club, received byes to the next round.
