Balderton Bowls Club, on Coronation Street, Balderton, celebrating 90th anniversary and holding open day

A bowls club is hoping to encourage more people to take up the sport as they celebrate a milestone anniversary.

Balderton Bowls Club, based at the greens on Coronation Street in Balderton, is this year celebrating 90 years since they were founded in 1934.

Currently the club has around 35 playing members, but hope to encourage more young people to join in.

In the run up to their anniversary party in June, the club are holding an open day next Saturday (May 25) from 9am to 2pm, to offer people a chance to see what bowls is all about and try it for themselves for free.

Dave Ellis, said: “Bowls is very social, you get to meet a lot of interesting people from different backgrounds and it’s a great way to spend a summer evening.

“Our open day is a friendly event, we have spare bowls for people to give it a go and it’s a sport that is accessible to most people.

“It’s fun and competitive and you get to enjoy the great outdoors — whatever the weather.”

Dave explained that at one point there were as many as 15 bowling rinks around Newark, but only around five are still in use today as the sport has fallen out of favour in recent decades.

He hopes that more people will see it as an enjoyable hobby and a great way to meet friends, and that it isn’t just for retirees to enjoy.
