Tom Cowling, of Newark, keeps composure as he dismantles Josh Hodgkins at Nottingham’s Britannia Hotel
Tom Cowling said it was about picking and choosing his shots after registering his fourth straight professional win.
The 23-year-old, from Newark, won every round as he eased to a unanimous points victory against Josh Hodgkins at Nottingham’s Britannia Hotel — and continued his 100% record.
“It was another learning fight for me,” said Cowling. “He was a tough lad, one of the toughest opponents I’ve come up against yet.
“He was very durable and I found that out — he could take shots all night. I had to stay focused and be patient.
“The game plan was as simple as that, because if I rushed in he was going to catch me, so it was about picking and choosing my shots.”
Cowling, who enjoyed more success as the rounds progressed, opened the card and set the tone for Carl Greaves’ fighters.
The bout held extra sentiment for the fighter as it fell almost one year after he made his professional debut.
Cowling would be the first to admit his first year as a pro didn’t go perfectly, due to a persistent back injury which caused frequent set backs.
Though, after Saturday’s win, he said he was reaching better form.
“My first one (training camp) was my best yet because it was leading in to my debut, but this camp went brilliantly,” Cowling said.
“I went to Fuerteventura and put in a lot of hard work out there.
“I did what I had to do, and of course it is nice to get a stoppage, but you can’t go out of your way looking for it because that is when the mistakes happen.
“I won every round and now it’s on to the next one.”
