Newark Town Ladies set for new season in the Nottinghamshire Girls and Ladies Football League Division One

The management team at Newark Town Ladies are confident the team can put up a promotion fight as they prepare for a new season in the Nottinghamshire Girls and Ladies Football League Division One.

Assistant coach Alvin Sheldon reflected on the heartbreak of last season which saw the Ladies finish as runners-up in both the Nottinghamshire county cup final and the league, narrowly missing out on promotion.

“It was disappointing,” he said.

“There was a little bit of inconsistency and distractions which meant there wasn’t 100% focus on what was happening on the pitch.

“But this season we have got a very good structure in place, we’ve defined the management team, we’ve defined the coaching roles, everybody knows exactly what’s expected of them

“We’re looking for consistency this season — it’s probably the best squad that we’ve ever had and we are super confident about giving it a really good go to get promoted.”

The club also recently hosted an open training day where bright young talents had the chance to try out for the Ladies team.

“We have a very good coaching schedule here,” said Alvin.

“We’ll bring girls in that maybe don’t have the experience, give them tips and pointers on what they’re doing, their technique, fitness, etc.

“All to try and help them improve and learn how to play in a football team.

“We do this because someone might have all the abilities with a football at their feet but not know how to fit into the system that the team is going to play.”

“We teach these girls about how to play their specific roles within a team and

He added: “We’ve got a very good, close knit squad and we want to make sure we’re bringing in players that are the right fit and have the right character to be in the team.

“The great news is we are pretty much going to have the full squad from last season, plus a few additions, for what we’re hoping is a title-pushing season.”

Alvin added that with the recent promotion of the men’s first team to Step Five, he would love to see the Ladies team gain parity and reach the same level, providing extra motivation.
