Newark and South Notts hockey clubs get victories
Hockey across the district saw some great games played with Newark women's 1sts winning 2-1 against West Bridgford.
Goals from Martha Philo and Lucy Wade saw the side scrape the win in what was a close contest.
The win puts the team at the top of their league, the Midlands Division Four competition.
Newark Ladies 2nds travelled to Lady Bay for their match against Boots.
Newark started strong with Amber Melita getting the side onto the board before Boots equalised.
The second-half saw Boots fire and get three goals to put the final score at 4-1.
Newark's Ladies' 3rds travelled to Nottingham where they sealed a 1-0 win over Players.
Caroline Marshall scored the only goal of the game in the 26th minute.
The men's side of the club saw their 2nds narrowly defeated 2-1 by North Notts.
It was a tough result for the squad who showed tenacity and will hope to build on the match for the rest of their campaign.
South Notts ladies continued a strong season as they won 3-1 over higher-ranked Trent Vale.
Right from the start, Souths were constantly pressing to win the ball, pinning the opponents back into their own 25.
Trent Vale quickly countered and created problems for the South Nott's defence as they nearly scored early on.
South Notts' keeper Elizabeth Turner managed to stop a good shot to keep Trent Vale out.
Down the other end, Evie Bates fired a powerful strike of her own which was blocked by the keeper.
Soon after, Becky Humphris silkily swept home a rebound to make it 1-0 to South.
A short time later, a shrewd pass by midfielder Sophie Atkinson found Ruby Ryan unmarked, who slipped it inside to Lucy Lloyd who drilled it home from a tight angle, to make it 2-0.
It was not long before the opposition got a goal back to make it 2-1 where the score stayed until the break.
Trent Vale piled on massive pressure, but South’s defence did not buckle under the tenacity.
Humphris then completed the scoring by getting her brace to put the result beyond doubt.
