Tom Cowling in action for first time after Midlands Area middleweight title defeat and Jade Grierson to fight on promoter Carl Greaves’ boxing show at Newark Showground
Boxers Tom Cowling and Jade Grierson are back in action at Newark Showground this weekend.
Cowling (12-1) faces journeyman Fernando Valencia (9-63) on promoter Carl Greaves’ show on Saturday.
It will be his first fight since his 96-95 points loss against Burntwood’s Troy Coleman for the Midlands Area middleweight title in September.
Fellow Newark boxer Grierson (4-0-1) faces a rematch with the experienced Vaida Masiokaite after an enthralling 56-56 draw on the same show last time out, a result that ended her perfect record.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing Tom Cowling and Jade Grierson back in action at Newark Showground,” said Greaves.
“I thought Tom’s area title fight with Troy Coleman was very close and could have easily gone his way.
“Jade’s fight with Vaida Masiokaite was a great scrap and her team have asked for a rematch, and I’ve delivered it for them.”
Boston cruiserweight Tom Pogson (6-0) tops the bill in an English title eliminator against unbeaten Londoner Sherif Musah (3-0) and fellow Bostonian Harvey Elding (3-0-1) looks to stay active before a Midlands Area super-bantamweight title fight with Yousuf Ibrahim early next year.
Full-time serving soldier in the Royal Anglian Regiment, Lincoln’s Jamie Behan (5-0), will be looking to maintain his winning start to the pro ranks against Leeds’ Joe Hardy.
Peterborough’s Ryan Williams (2-0), who made his debut earlier this year at Newark Showground, will be looking to make it a hat-trick of wins in 2024 against London’s Lee Hallett.
Former Midlands Area lightweight champion, Shepshed’s Joe Ducker, will be looking to make it back-to-back wins in four weeks following a 27-month aborted retirement.
Halifax heavyweight Josh Sandland is also chasing back-to-back wins following a 10-month ring hiatus after four consecutive defeats.
Nottingham-based Lithuanian Gabriele Strikatyte makes her professional debut following her recent move from the unlicensed boxing scene and, before that, a successful martial arts career.
Completing the bill is Dublin’s Glenn Lynch (1-0) who makes his first appearance on English shores following his professional debut win last month at Dublin’s national stadium.
“People know how much pride I take in putting my shows in my hometown,” said promoter Greaves. “I think I’m doing as much as anybody to keep Newark on the sporting map, even though it’s getting harder and harder to put these shows on.
“I’m really looking forward to Tom Pogson v Sherif Musah in an English eliminator.
“Massive things are on the horizon for ‘Big Mush’ if he maintains his progress.
“Harvey Elding has a bright future too with a Midlands Area title fight agreed for next year.
“We have also got fighters at various stages of their careers: young prospects Ryan Williams, Glenn Lynch, and debutant Gabriele Strikaityte plus comeback kids Joe Ducker and Josh Sandland.”
