Southwell Speed skater Freddie Polak invited to Europa Cup finals

By Connor Thompson

Freddie Polak’s recent form has earned him an invitation to the Europa Cup finals.

Polak, 12, a student at the Minster School, Southwell, raised eyebrows in the StarClass series, and as a result of his good performances, will compete in Rostock, Germany, later this month.

The Bleasby speed skater currently holds category E 500m, 333m and 222m British records, but failed to replicate his past success in his most recent outing.

Competing in Hasselt, Belgium, in the Speculaas Cup Junior D category, Polak got off to a bad start, failing to qualify from the heats in the 777m race, finishing 12th.

However, the second day was a massive improvement.

Polak finished second in the 500m and followed it up with a third-placed finish in the 1,000m super-final.

That gave him an overall position of second (out of 19 skaters) and a place on the podium.

Arty Clary, of Nottingham, the only other British competitor, finished sixth.
