Fireworks on and off the field for Southwell Rugby Club as they win local derby against Newark and host successful bonfire event
THERE were fireworks on and off the field all weekend at Southwell Rugby Club as they held a successful bonfire night and their second team celebrated a good derby win against Newark.
The match took place under lights at Southwell and was much anticipated by both camps.
Southwell took advantage of playing at home and won the bragging rights this time around.
In a close contest, Southwell pipped Newark by one point, winning 18-17.
Southwell started strong before Newark took the lead in the second-half.
The score switched again before full-time as Newark suffered a late defeat.
Both teams were very evenly matched and it was an entertaining game.
The match delighted the home crowd who appreciated the hard fought contest.
The 1sts hosted Hinckley as they went down 39-15 to tough opposition.
The firsts will travel to Mellish on Saturday (kick-off 2pm).
In the last senior match for Southwell, the 3rds went down 75-5 in a friendly contest against Tupton.
The club reported that their bonfire event was a success with the 1st Galaxy Fireworks display going off without a hitch.
A large crowd enjoyed the festivities and the club said the family atmosphere was fantastic for all ages.
