Newark Flowserve win East Midlands Counties League league cup after penalty shoot-out against Clifton All Whites
Newark Flowserve are league cup champions for the second consecutive season.
Flowserve, who celebrated the Notts Senior League league and cup double last season, enjoyed promotion via a second place finish last weekend, and added the East Midlands Counties League cup after a nervy 4-1 penalty shoot-out win over Clifton All Whites.
After a 0-0 draw over 120 minutes, the pressure was on, and former Notts County shot-stopper Joe Searson looked confident in the Flowserve goal, but in the end, a heroic performance wasn’t needed as Clifton’s Aaron Large and Martin Ball fired over the bar, while Will Rawson, Jammy Lloyd, Danny Meadows and Sam Agar all ruthlessly put their spot-kicks away.
Searon said it was a great shoot-out win.
“Cup winners and promotion in one season shows what we’re about, and there was unreal support from the fans who filled two coaches.”
A statement from the club, which celebrated the successful season, said: “A huge thank you to everyone who came down to support us this season, it has been fantastic and much appreciated from the staff, players, management and the chairman. We hope to see you all back next season for our first ever challenge at step-five.
Flowserve’s joint manager, Stephen Kirkham, said: “A great escape, two league cups, a league title and back-to-back promotions. “What an unbelievable three seasons with this club.”
Newark local and shoot-out scorer Meadows, who recently returned from injury, already has his mind on step-five football. He said: “Now we build for next season.”
